STATEMENT
 |
|
I grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois,
a suburb of Chicago. From early
on, I have been interested in art
and doing creative things; in fact,
all I ever told anyone I wanted to
be was an artist. I did start out as
an Art major at the University of
Illinois, but switched majors when
I transferred to Purdue University
after my freshman year. Even though
design was my main focus, I added
art classes into my schedule every
chance I could. Class hours in
Ceramics and Jewelry were almost
even with my design lab hours! After
graduation, I spent twelve years doing
commercial interior design in the
Milwaukee area.
In 1985, I enrolled in a post graduate
Art Therapy Certification program at
the Thomas Merton Institute. Being
an art therapist provides me with an
opportunity to share my love of the
creative process and its healing
capacity with others.
I find it difficult to limit myself to one
medium -- printmaking, painting, paper
making, metalsmithing, and jewelry
design are just a few of my creative
outlets. I believe that the insights I get
from these various disciplines carry
over into all my artwork.
During the winter months, I work on
monotypes. The spontaneity of working
directly on the printing plate with inks
and oilbars is almost addicting!
Working with the monotype process
is exciting and unpredictable, which
is what I need during the long Wisconsin
winters! I try to achieve a luminosity in my
monotypes through use of overlapping
color. One piece may have several trips
through the printing press before I achieve
the look I want. The series on which I am
presently working is inspired by southwest
petroglyphs, pictographs, animals, and
vegetation. Handmade paper helps to
foster the rustic quality in the finished art.
When the weather warms up, I switch to
plein- air painting- pastels, acrylics, and
watercolors. I have an attraction to the
Southwest, and particularly feel at home
at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
I love the color of light there, the softness
of the forms, the infinite array of colors, and
the variety of textures. What I try to portray in
my paintings is the love I feel for the
landscape, the intensity of the colors, and
the play of light over forms. When painting
the Wisconsin landscape, I feel challenged
to present the "green-ness" without having
the painting appearing dull or the greens
looking redundant. The whole process of
painting is a sort of dance to me, with the
rhythms appearing in the form of brush
strokes and dynamic composition. |
